The
Sound Of Music's classic tune, "Do-Re-Mi,"
taught me that tea was "a drink
with jam and bread."
While I hum along to Julie Andrews’
iconic lyrics, I can often be found nibbling toast with jam at the kitchen
table, sipping tea and checking morning emails. Jam and tea are the perfect
pair for waking my taste buds from their slumber.
Jump back to the chilly days of the
holiday season. I was frantically searching for a gift for a foodie friend when
I stumbled upon Sunchowder’s delectable shop on Foodzie (my favorite online
marketplace to discover amazing food from artisanal producers). I was instantly
drawn to the Ginger Pear butter, a unique flavor profile perfect for my
friend’s eclectic cravings.
To my surprise, Wendy (founder and
creator of this artisan jam & chutney company) had included a kind note
within the package that read: “I could not just send you one when I saw your
fabulous tea cups.” I took a closer look inside the brown box to find that she
generously gifted two additional jams: Pumpkin Butter and Peach Lavender Jam. In an effort to share the kindness, I
gifted my friend the Pumpkin Butter along with the original purchase of Ginger
Pear Jam, which left me with the Peach Lavender.
The moment that I heard the lid's seal
break, I could smell the mouth-watering sweetness of the peaches. Before this
all-natural, handcrafted jam could meet the bread, I dug in with a teaspoon.
First taste: It’s as if I just took a large bite of a fresh peach gently sprinkled
with sugar. The texture of the pieces of peach immersed in the smooth jam is
divine. The sweetness is subtly followed by the brightness of the lemon juice
and a faint perfume of lavender.
My palate, still in winter hibernation,
was brought back to life with the natural ingredients that reminded me of deep
golden summer. With each bite (I eventually took the spoon from the jar & spread
it on some bread) it became so very clear that this jam was “lovingly
hand-cooked and jarred in small batches with the freshest seasonal fruits and
the finest ingredients - no corn syrup, commercial pectin or preservatives.”
The perfect sweet partner for a cup of
tea!
